Heat Shields & Thermal Protection

Advanced Protection Against Radiant Heat and Extreme Environments

MTE Heat Shield Cladding Systems are engineered to protect both personnel and critical equipment from the effects of radiant heat, solar loading, and adverse environmental conditions—including offshore installations operating in extreme arctic climates.

In addition to high‑performance thermal protection, MTE’s heat shields support natural ventilation, helping prevent the build-up of toxic or explosive gases in confined areas. In egress zones such as stair towers and walkways, the shielding also provides enhanced visibility, delivering an important safety advantage during everyday operations and emergency situations.

Combatting Heat, Solar Radiation & Environmental Stress

In harsh offshore and industrial environments, thermal radiation can rapidly degrade electrical components, HVAC systems, insulation, and fuel lines—especially under long‑duration or high‑intensity exposure.

MTE’s heat shield systems mitigate these risks with proven, measurable performance, achieved through innovative panel design and carefully selected materials. By reducing incident heat flux by more than 90%, our cladding provides highly effective thermal shielding for both equipment and personnel areas, maintaining safety and reliability even in extreme temperatures, including arctic conditions.

Flexible Panel Configurations

To meet varied project and performance requirements, MTE panels are available in:

  • Single-skin perforated designs with multiple pattern options
  • Double-skin arrangements for enhanced thermal protection

Each panel’s corrugated geometry is precisely engineered to optimise spanning capacity without compromising thermal performance.

Heat Shield System Support & Engineering Services

MTE provides comprehensive support throughout the lifecycle of every heat shield cladding system, offering detailed design and engineering together with full manufacturing and delivery services. Our engineering team develops precise heat flux and temperature reduction calculations based on incident heat conditions and shield‑to‑object separation distances, ensuring optimal system performance for each application.

We also produce complete structural integrity calculations covering all relevant environmental loads, supported by thorough design documentation to meet all required regulatory and certification standards. This integrated approach ensures that every solution we deliver is technically robust, compliant, and tailored to the specific demands of each project.

Panel Configurations

Typical Single Skin Panel

MTE’s single skin heat shield panels are available in 40%, 32% and 23% open area options, providing flexibility to meet individual project performance requirements.

Each panel is designed using MTE’s standard 80 mm profile, typically supplied at 1050 mm width, and can be manufactured as either a framed or unframed unit depending on installation needs.

Typical Double Skin Panel

For applications requiring enhanced thermal and wind‑velocity performance, MTE offers a double skin arrangement comprising a 32% open area front skin combined with a secondary perforated layer.

These panels are custom‑designed for each project and are typically supplied at 1000 mm width in a fully framed configuration.

Typical fixing details

All framed panel systems are supplied with pre‑drilled fixing points, minimising site drilling and reducing overall installation time and cost.

Each panel incorporates fixed holes in the bottom member and vertical slotted holes in the top member, allowing for natural expansion during periods of elevated heat exposure, such as flaring events.

Muster Points

MTE Heatshields safeguard personnel in safety-critical areas, enabling safe mustering and controlled evacuation.

Sunshade Panel System

MTE Sunshade Panels shield personnel and equipment from extreme environmental conditions, providing effective protection against solar radiation.
