Meet MTE Junior Design Engineer – Brad Hemmings

Brad Hemmings – MTE’s Junior Design Engineer is currently working towards a Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) degree whilst playing a crucial support role within the existing MTE team.

Tell us about your job role?

Following a short break away after completion of my apprenticeship with MTE, I have now returned to a lead role which is primarily focussed around the development, design & engineering of thermal defence products for the Naval industry.

Lately, I have also supported on other live projects; the most recent example was a heat shielding walkway which was designed to protect a client structure from a radiant heat source.

What previous experience do you have?

I started off my engineer career within MTE as a Technical Apprentice. Across the 4 year course I  gained a good understanding of Fire & Blast solutions and the underlying engineering and design principles.

This knowledge was acquired through playing an active role in the engineering efffort on many large-scale projects and was further underpinned by the academic learning that ran alongside. On completion of my apprenceship I was awarded with a level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering and Level 3 NVQ.

What degree are you currently working towards?

Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons).

Best part of your job?

The best part of my role is continually developing as an engineer. I receive vital on-the-job experience whilst also working towards a degree.

My current role also provides me with the opportunity to see a project through all stages; from concept, right the way through to installation. This process allows a detailed understanding of all contributing factors and delivers the perfect foundation for value-added engineering.
